What Exactly Is Yerba Mate?

Yerba Mate is a traditional South American brew that has gained popularity throughout North America for it’s myriad of health benefits. Namely, it’s been highly revered for its ability to increase energy, boost mental focus and speed up metabolism.

It is made from the leaves of the South American holly tree, Illex paraguariensis. This plant offers naturally caffeinated and nourishing leaves that are harvested and made into the brew we know as Yerba mate.

The drink itself is celebrated throughout Argentina, Paraguay, Brazil, and many other South American countries and it’s no wonder why!

It is reported to have the strength of coffee and the health benefits of green tea, offering us the solution to a constant battle between green tea or coffee.

Yerba Mate Contains 90% More Antioxidants Than Green Tea!

The drink is also chock-full of amino acids and polyphenols. In fact, it contains a whopping 24 vitamins and minerals, 15 amino acids and 11 polyphenols (which are micronutrients packed with antioxidants). Antioxidants help to fight free-radicals in the body, which are said to help protect against chronic diseases like type 2 diabetes and heart disease.

It Has Well-Rounded Benefits That Help Encourage A Balanced Lifestyle

People in South America have traditionally used Yerba Mate as a part of a holistic, balanced lifestyle. In addition to its nutrient-rich content, it’s been shown to help improve metabolism, burn more fat, and maintain clear focus for longer. Interestingly, it has a long history of being consumed during bouts of famine because of it’s nutrition content.

Get Your Caffeine Fix, Without The Crash

Mate contains stimulants like theobromine and theophylline, which work alongside caffeine to provide improved focus and memory, but without the crash that comes from a cup of coffee. It’s reported to give a steady, consistent stream of energy that lasts longer, therefore helping to curb those afternoon caffeine top-ups.

What Is That Metal Straw Thing?

The traditional way to drink Yerba Mate is with a gourd and bombilla, which is a special tea straw that helps to catch the tea leaves while you drink. Using a bombilla is helpful because it allows you to leave your tea leaves to steep freely, unrestricted by an infuser or tea bag.

This is a great option for enjoying your herbal tisanes as well, which are often enjoyed for their health benefits!
