The Chocolate Chip Cookie Was... An Accident?

You read that right. The chocolate chip cookie we love and adore was created by complete accident. What a sweet discovery!

Ruth Graves Wakefield was the chef who discovered this infamous cookie in 1938. While she was baking her ‘famous’ Chocolate Butter Drop cookies, she ran out of bakers chocolate and ended up chopping up a Nestle semi-sweet chocolate bar in its place. Expecting it to melt through the batter, she carried on with the recipe as usual, and the chocolate chip cookie we all love was born!

Wakefield called the cookie the Chocolate Crunch Cookie and the recipe was soon renowned as “Mrs. Wakefield’s Original Toll House Cookie”. It was subsequently printed on the packaging of Nestle Chocolate Morsels and it’s still printed on their packaging today.
