Embracing the Power of In-Person Human Connection in a Digital World

As the weather gets colder and we have the convenience of technology to community, you may feel inclined to hibernate indoors and save social gatherings for sunnier days. But, we are human beings and we need genuine human connections.

In-person interactions with loved ones and friends help reduce feelings of loneliness and improve overall happiness and well-being, especially as we head into the season of blues. I’m not saying you have to get all fancied up and say yes to all the holiday party invitations that are coming up. Some of us are introverts or prefer more intimate settings.

Here are 5 Intimate Ways to Connect with Friends During the Holiday Season:

1. You Can’t Go Wrong with Food and Drinks

Picking a theme is a good way to start planning one. If it’s tea, invite friends or family over for a tea tasting or a cozy tea party. If it’s apples, bake various apple treats together to enjoy. Try a vegetarian or Mexican cooking class. Or, keep it simple and host a potluck paired with a gift exchange.

2. Get some Fresh Air in the Great Outdoors

Whether it’s a leisurely nature walk or a hiking trip, take advantage of the natural beauty our country offers, and get some physical activity in while fostering connections with others. You’ll feel more restored and grounded after spending time in nature and catching up with your supportive and caring friends.

3. There Are Only Winners on Game Night

This is a good one if you can’t leave your family out of the plans. Gather your friends for a fun-filled evening of board games, card games, or charades. Kids can go off on their own (remember to set guidelines around video gaming!) or play together as a large group. Grown-ups are sure to have just as much as fun as the kids. Laughter is guaranteed, and you'll create lasting memories together.

The Magic of Stories Lives On

Have you ever thought about starting a book club? Now is a great time to try it. Or, if you’re not into books, host a storytelling night where guests can share their favorite childhood stories or travel adventures to spark laughter and meaningful connections. Storytelling is a powerful way to foster empathy, understanding, and connection among individuals, especially in a cozy and intimate setting.

5. Host an elegant, but low-effort Pen To Paper Experience

Journaling truly is a mindfulness practice core to our self-care and wellness. Do it along with your favourite humans, and you’ll have an afternoon or evening of mindfulness and connection that will be remembered well into the new year. Do Good Paper Co.’s new Pen To Paper Experiences make it so easy to host a memorable experience. The DIY Kit comes with thoughtfully-curated items to set the mood, snacks and tea from Tease, and individual journal bundles with writing and conversation prompts. Your friends will go home feeling more connected than they thought possible in this busy, digital world.

With these ideas, we encourage you to plan a couple of intimate gatherings this fall and into the holiday season. Prioritize quality time with loved ones, embrace opportunities for meaningful connections, and engage in activities that foster deeper relationships and authentic interactions. Winter doesn’t have to be just for hibernating, although there’s nothing wrong with doing any of the above activities in your jammies.
